Eastgate Shopping Centre

Ace Heart

Fully covered and featuring 70 shops spend some time here exploring when the weather is inclement. One good feature of the shopping centre is it’s mixture of independent and national stores allowing for a varied choice of goods.

Old Dee Bridge

The bridge gets its name from the river that it crosses and dates back from the Roman period however the structure as it stands today was largely rebuilt in 1387. Watch over the day as the river changes in height underneath due to the tidal movements.

The Weir

3 Heart

The structure was originally built in 1093 to provide a head of water for the medieval mills on the river. Due to the tidal nature of the river dee the weir is underwater for parts of the day. If you watch carefully at the salmon leap between March and June, you may catch a glimpse of a salmon or two making their way upstream. Herons and other birds are also on the lookout for fish so be alert! Legend has it that the first salmon to be caught by fisherman was given as a gift to the vicar of Handbridge church.

The Guildhall

Constructed in 1873 as a church the building is now a cocktail bar and events venue where you can sip on a drink and take in the architectural beauty. Later in the evening the dance floor opens, and you can have a dance with company late into the evening.

River Cruises

There are 3 boats to choose from (Lady Diana, Mark Twain and Jackie) and two different lengths of cruise. The first 30-minute trip transports you to the city outskirts and provides an informative voiceover of the historical context of the features on the riverbanks. The second longer 2-hour trip takes you to the Aldford Iron Bridge. As you leave the city border things take a more relaxed turn and you can sit back and take in nature with a refreshment from the onboard bar.

Suspension Bridge

The suspension bridge as it stands today was constructed in 1923 making it just over 100 years old! There was a previous bridge constructed in 1852 however this was replaced by what stands today. Stand still and you will feel the movement of the bridge as others cross. Look East and you will see Chesters only pub on the river, The Boat House, The Royal Chester Rowing Club and in the distance Earls Eye Meadows can also be seen. From the West you will see the Groves, Bandstand, Weir and Old Dee Bridge.

Eastgate Clock

Possibly the most iconic and most photographed feature in Chester, the Eastgate clock was first constructed in 1897. Helping tourists to tell the time for over 100 years the tower sits atop the city walls and can be viewed from all angles.

Squirrel Park

This beautiful park is missed by some visitors but is worth a visit when the sun is shining. The park is also known as Grosvenor Park and dates back to 1867 and features a statue of Richard, Second Marquis of Westminster. Throughout the park there are many tame squirrels that wander on the lookout for food. Make sure to prepare for your visit and bring nuts for them to eat! Another feature for children or railway enthusiast is the model railway that runs through a portion of the park, make sure you wave as it makes its way around the track, and the driver might even give you a toot of the horn. Flowers are planted in the borders during the summer and there are also various temporary statues throughout the year.

St John's Church

This structure is great for visiting during the day but is brought to life at night by the wonderful light show on the ruins portion. Originally the Cathedral of Chester the ruins are available to visit all day and the church during specific hours.

Boat Hire

If you want another way to explore the River Dee then look no further than the boats available to hire on the groves. Whether it’s a pedalo, rowing boat or small motorboat that takes your fancy they have it all to get you floating on the river!

Christmas Market

The Chester Christmas Market returns to Chester's historic Town Hall Square each winter, bringing more than 80 festive stalls to the city centre. Visitors can browse handmade gifts, local crafts, jewellery, seasonal food and mulled wine while enjoying the market's traditional Christmas atmosphere beneath the illuminated tree beside the Town Hall and Cathedral.

Duck Race

The Chester Duck Race is a much-loved annual charity event held on the River Dee at The Groves, where brightly decorated rubber ducks sponsored by local businesses and schools race downstream in support of The Countess Charity. The free family-friendly event features children’s activities, face painting, raffles and live entertainment before the main race begins.
